Ground laid for airport

The construction work on Hassan airport, supposedly one of the largest in south India, was set in motion here on Sunday. Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda performed laid in the foundation stone in the absence of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.
The airport will have a facility to export agricultural produce to international market, pilot training and repair unit and recreational facilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gowda said the airport will boost development activity and help in the export of agriculture produce. It will also give a boost to dairy farming.
The entire scenario of Hassan and its surrounding regions will change in the next years, he added.
The airport will come up on 3,100 acres of land. In the first phase, Rs. 500 crore will be spent.
Within a year, a major portion of the runway would be ready. The rest of the projects would be set in motion in the next 18 months.
The government has promised to procure all land required for the project, Mr Gowda said.
District In-Charge Minister H D Revanna and Rajeev Chandrashekhar, MP, H S Prakash, MLA, former MP H K Javaregowda and Deputy Commissioner Ashwathnarayangowda were also present.
